Robot Architecture
4 filmsComing soonOne robot read end to end: what makes a machine a robot, the loop it runs many times a second, how its software is split into layers, and the separate layer that keeps the people beside it safe.
You have seen a robot vacuum, a delivery drone, a car with nobody driving and a humanoid on stage, and nobody has shown you what is inside them or why they are so hard to build. One film at a time: how a robot senses, chooses and acts, and how AI took over the choosing, in plain words.
One robot read end to end: what makes a machine a robot, the loop it runs many times a second, how its software is split into layers, and the separate layer that keeps the people beside it safe.
What a robot actually receives from the world: distance from two cameras, distance from laser light, speed from radio, tilt from motion sensors; how several sensors are combined; and how a robot works out where it is from them.
What moves a robot: the motors in its joints, how many ways an arm can move, how it works out where to put its hand, how it walks without falling over, and why picking something up is so hard.
How a robot chooses what to do: finding a route, holding to it against the world's pushes, and the newer way that is taking over the 'think' step, learning to move from practice in simulation, from people's demonstrations, and from large models trained on pictures and words.
The robots already at work and what each shows about design: warehouses rebuilt round the robot, surgery where the surgeon still moves every instrument, the line between driver assistance and a car with nobody driving, the drone in the sky, and the humanoid that still cannot do what a child does.
